Core update March 2019

This is another update related to Google's "core updates" sequence. Google does not provide specific information about each and every core update on its announcements, but does state the estimated date of release.

 

Although before the official announcement, Google did imply a major and particularly important update is about to release, the update did not appear to be very different from the other core updates. For that reason, even though it took place near the Pubcon conference in Florida, the nickname "Florida Update 2" was soon forgotten (the original Florida update took place in 2000 and had a major impact on Google, which was only two years old at the time).

 

Once the update began to roll, one key conclusion was that this update is basically a rollback of some of the previous updates, so many sites actually returned to their previous positions. If you've read information about some of the previous core updates, you probably know it's not a rare thing at all...

 

Although many site owners and even black hat enthusiasts (who use questionable SEO methods) talked about an increase in rankings, keep in mind that for every site that ranks higher, there’s a site that now ranks lower.

 

People like Eric Lancheres and Jeff Coyle compared sites with major traffic changes, reaching pretty interesting insights of their own. Lancheres talks about the fact that sites with poor user experience (aggressive advertising, low quality content) have sustained more damage, but there is really nothing new with these findings.

 

Coyle talked about the claim that a lot of content is not necessarily a guarantee for success, although sites with frequently updated content also passed the update successfully, in most cases.
Bear in mind that this claim “longer is better” has been controversial since the historical panda update...

 

An interesting issue they both addressed was the effect of the algorithm on changing domains. On one hand, it seems that subdomains may be damaged even if the primary domain remains unharmed. On the other hand, transferring content from a site that is completely or partially damaged to a new domain no longer works as well as it did after previous updates.

 

What to do if you were damaged?

 

Since there are quite a few different theories about this update, and it is hard to find common ground amongst all the affected sites, it seems that this update is one of those updates that don’t require making major changes in your website.
As always, if you use aggressive methods to attract users to perform certain actions, try to tone it down. This may help you recover from one of the following updates.
