Google August 2026 Spam Update
The rollout started on August 18 at approximately 9:27 a.m. Pacific Time and was officially recorded on Google's Search Status Dashboard. Unlike some previous spam-related announcements, Google did not publish a separate explanatory blog post or introduce new spam policy categories.
This follows the March and June 2026 spam updates. The June update came shortly after Google clarified that its spam policies also apply to attempts to manipulate results generated by AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. However, Google has not confirmed that the August update specifically targets AI Search manipulation.
What goes up?
Google has not identified specific types of sites that should gain visibility. In principle, legitimate sites competing against pages benefiting from spam techniques may improve as spammy results are demoted.
Sites with original, useful content and natural link profiles may therefore see relative gains, but it is too early to identify reliable winners while the rollout is still underway.
What goes down?
Sites or pages violating Google's existing spam policies are the primary potential targets. This can include manipulative link practices, scaled low-value content, cloaking, doorway abuse, expired-domain abuse, site reputation abuse, and other techniques intended primarily to manipulate rankings.
Importantly, a ranking decline during the rollout does not automatically mean that Google has classified a site as spam.
What to do?
Don't make major changes based on one or two days of ranking movement. Monitor rankings, impressions, clicks, and organic traffic beginning August 18 and wait for the rollout to finish before drawing strong conclusions.
If a site experiences a significant sustained decline, review it against Google's existing spam policies rather than looking for a new August-specific rule. Pay particular attention to scaled content, questionable backlinks, third-party content published primarily to exploit the host site's authority, and other ranking-first tactics.
Google notes that recovery from spam-related algorithmic effects can take months because its automated systems need to recognize that a site is consistently complying with its policies.
